NAIDOC Week at NVP

Posted 5th June 2017.

NAIDOC Week is 2nd-9th July 2017, with the theme this year being "Our Languages Matter."

NAIDOC originally for "National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee," but has ended up becoming the name of the week itself. Nambucca Valley Phoenix will be helping out with numerous events on various days throughout the week.

The Gumbaynggirr language was traditionally spoken between the Nambucca River in the south (southern dialect) and the Clarence River in the north (northern dialect) and west past Guyra (tablelands region). Here are some Gumbaynggirr phrases:

  • Giinagay - hello
  • Yaam darruy ngiina gaduyaygu - It's good to meet you
  • Ngiinda darruy - Are you well?
